Located in the heart of Central Square, Cambridge City Hall is one of the most distinctive civic buildings in the Boston area. Built in the Richardsonian Romanesque style, its stone façade, bell tower, and historic interiors make it a striking setting for an intimate ceremony. For couples planning a Cambridge City Hall wedding, the building offers both architectural beauty and a strong sense of place.

Cambridge City Hall also holds a special place in marriage history. On May 17, 2004, it issued the first same-sex marriage licenses in the United States following the ruling in Goodridge v. Department of Public Health. Clerks in Cambridge opened their doors just after midnight, allowing couples to receive licenses hours before neighboring municipalities.

Jeff and Sam chose this historic space for their late-October elopement. As architects, they were drawn to our photography style because it intentionally incorporates the architecture and environment of a location—something that was especially important to them.

Starting the Day in Central Square

Their day began around the corner from City Hall at Franklin Street Park, where Aaron met them for relaxed portraits beneath the soft fall light. The quiet green space offered a calm start before heading into Central Square.

From there, they all walked to Central Square Florist, where Jeff and Sam picked up their boutonnieres and pinned them on each other—a simple moment that felt both intimate and celebratory.

On the way to City Hall, we paused for portraits in front of colorful murals and a distinctive storefront that caught Aaron’s eye. Central Square always has interesting textures and layers, and Jeff and Sam moved through it with an easy, relaxed energy.

When they reached Cambridge MA City Hall, Aaron made sure to incorporate the building’s bell tower into their portraits before heading inside.

The architecture continued to impress indoors, and Aaron took advantage of the beautiful interior spaces for more candid portraits while Jeff and Sam waited for their appointment.

Cambridge City Hall wedding ceremonies allow up to ten guests, making them perfect for couples seeking a simple, intimate experience. Jeff and Sam, however, chose to keep the ceremony private—just the two of them, the clerk, and Aaron.

Their ceremony took place in the Sullivan Chamber, a spacious room with warm-toned furniture, rust-colored patterned wallpaper, a muted red carpet, and portraits of historic figures in gilded frames looking down from the walls.

Portraits Around Harvard Square

The rain let up just enough for the next part of their adventure. They all took an Uber to Harvard Square for more portraits, exploring a few locations with striking architecture.

Their first stop was the area around the Harvard Art Museums and the Carpenter Center for the Visual Arts, where a simple gray wall created a beautiful contrast with the vibrant red foliage nearby. Aaron photographed them walking along Massachusetts Avenue, even framing them through an archway as they passed the Harvard Book Store.

Another stop was Harvard University’s Smith Campus Center, whose thin wood panels provided a modern architectural texture that Jeff and Sam especially appreciated. Throughout the afternoon, they carried a calm, quietly joyful energy that comes through clearly in their photos.

Pizza to Celebrate the Cambridge City Hall Elopement

The final stop of the day was Joe’s Pizza in Harvard Square—an easygoing place that felt both familiar and celebratory. There, the newlyweds shared a couple of classic cheese slices, the perfect ending to their Cambridge City Hall elopement.

When Jeff and Sam invited Aaron to join them for a slice, he happily accepted.

Their story doesn’t end there, though. Jeff and Sam are planning a second celebration in the summer of 2026 at one of their favorite breweries, where they’ll gather with friends and family. And we’re looking forward to documenting that chapter as well.
